Down to the Wire

Posted on December 7, 2023December 7, 2023 by Commish

With one week remaining in the SPFL regular season, four playoff spots are filled and two are still in play. The Piranha Brothers welcomed a relief valve for the building pressure of the perfect regular season. And college football showed that there is definitely one thing the NFL does better than they do … advancing teams to their “playoffs”. (You think the NFL wouldn’t love to exclude the NFC South champion from the playoffs this season?) While it’s not “right”, it’s not surprising, is it? As I heard Dan Patrick say this week on his show, the NCAA football “playoffs” are 100% a TV show and TV ratings (#money) trump all else. Henceforth, we get more Saban. Yay.

Coach Leach was an American treasure.

But in more important matters, the Piranha Brothers (12-1) and the Bright 1s (10-3) have clinched division titles and after playing a meaningless game this weekend, will not return to action until Week 16 when they face off against opponents to advance to the SPFL Super Bowl. Enjoy that break from the gauntlet.

Meanwhile, Yesterday’s Corn (8-5) and Beauty and her Beasts (8-5) secured the runner up wild card slots and will pray for no injuries this weekend as they await their total points scored wild card foes. As it stands right now, the Mighty Moops (1792) and Heath’s Heroes (1769) hold the fifth and sixth seeds. The Turf Turtles are a manageable (1729) forty points out and the Thunder Monkeys (1633) are praying for a Yesterday’s Corn-esque showing this weekend.

Moops 163 – Brothers 151: The grizzled old Commish handed the Brothers’ their first L of the season thanks to Dak Prescott (28) and, mostly, Christian Watson’s (27) Sunday night performance. The Brothers were led by Mike Evans (31) and Alvin Kamara (30) and now face the tough task of maintaining focus until the games matter again.

Not sure who needs this right now, but here you go.

Bright 1s 136 – Midgets 86: A matchup against the Bitter ones is just what the doctor ordered for the 1s, as they regained some mojo led by Deebo Samuel (46) and Devon Achane (27). The Midgets were led by Joe Mixon (31) and Tyjae Spears (18).

Beauty 125 – Heroes 96: Beauty and the Beasts claimed a critical victory, clinching that wild card spot, thanks to Jalen Hurts and Devonta Smith teaming up for 24 points each. The Heroes were laid low by big injuries to Kenny Pickett and Tank Dell mid-game and were led by James Conner (25) and the Dolphins D (21). Now the question remains, can the Heroes cobble together a lineup and crawl across the finish line for a wild card spot?

May be an image of 1 person, playing football and text that says 'The NFL Playoff Committee will now have to vote out the Jaguars from playoff contention despite their record because Trevor Lawrence is injured. 188 5-6 28 28 8-3 4TH 5:25'

Names 141 – Megatron 131: A meaningless game, but a game that each team can be proud of, as they slugged it out to the end. The Names came out on top, thanks to the Duval County Connection of Trevor Lawrence (25) and Evan Engram (23) while Megatron was led by Cee Dee Lamb (32) and Russell Wilson (21).

Coach Leach again. Three minutes long but worth it.

Turtles 143 – Lightning 78: The Turtles put up impressive numbers in victory, especially in light of the loss of Rhamondre Stevenson and Christian Kirk, led by Jake Browning (28), who’s career is made now that’s he’s been mentioned in an SPFL article. The Lightning had CJ Stroud (16) and Jerome Ford (15). Yikes.

#Rams coach Sean McVay on why he went for a touchdown with two minutes left, instead of kneeling the ball and then kicking a field goal to go up 11:

Hahaha. Thumbs up.

Corn 223 – Monkeys 128: The Corn must have had Chipotle and Taco Bell as they exploded with a full double figure scoring lineup, topped by DK Metcalf (39) and Tyreek Hill (36). The Monkeys put up a nice score despite two zeroes in the lineup and one two pointer, led by twin 37 point outings by Brock Purdy and JaMarr Chase.

Andrei Vasilevskiy is a picture of concentration in the crease.
