The Calm Before The Draft: Predictions, Reminders, and One Last Chance at Keepers

Posted on August 27, 2026 by Commish

Three days from now, the rush from our annual SPFL Draft will be wearing off. If form holds … The Midgets will have accidentally auto-drafted their first four picks despite being online for the draft. The Brothers will have loaded up on four of the best WRs the league has to offer. The Lightning will be upset because “the computer skipped them” when it was actually just their keeper selection’s turn. The Bright 1s will have drained the timer clock like it was blood from a turnip. The Monkeys will have autodrafted yet another Super Bowl caliber roster.

And yet all of us will still be convinced that this is our year.

Man, I love it. It is like Christmas in August for me.

This is a short blog post, just to touch base and drop a couple of nuggets before I drop a load of something else with my annual NFL predictions.

  • Number one — Um. Don’t forget the draft is this Sunday. August 30th at 2pm. Please either be online or have set up autodraft before then. Maybe test your connection, too. Just sayin’.
  • Number two — Tomorrow, Friday, August 28th is the deadline to send in your keepers.  Half of the league have yet to send anyone to me. Maybe your rosters from last year sucked, but you better double check. I see a few juicy ones out there going unused. BTW, the only new one to add since my last post is Heath’s Heroes hanging on to Travis Etienne in the 7th round.
  • Number three — Dues are … due. Counting myself, I’ve got four in the SPFL Regional Bank account so far. Venmo, Paypal, and Zelle are all options.
  • Number four — I guess I carry more weight with the Yahoo management than I realized. Just yesterday, Yahoo sent out an email indicating that they were implementing a couple of changes to the platform on the eve of the season and one of those was … TE PREMIUM SCORING, as I wanted to do in my opening manifesto. So … back to the original message I sent, TE’s will receive 1.5 points per reception this season! Kudos to Yahoo for making the change.

And finally, what you’ve all been waiting for, so you can send in your futures bets to FanDuel … how the 2026-2027 NFL Season will shake out:

In the AFC, the East will be the Bills, Patriots, Jets, and Dolphins, with the Bills being the AFC’s #1 overall seed. The Patriots will be a sixth seed wild card.

In the North, the Bengals will take the division and be the 3rd seed, with the Steelers, Ravens, and Browns missing out on the postseason.

In the South, the Texans will take the title and be the 2nd seed, while the runner up Jaguars will be the fifth seed. The Colts and Titans will miss out.

And in the West, the Chargers will take the division and be the 4th seed, while the Chiefs will find the gas for one last run and be the 7th and final wild card. The Broncos and Raiders will be out.

In the playoffs, the top seeds all advance with the Texans moving on to face the Bengals while the Chargers get the pleasure of going north to face the Bills Mafia. In the AFC Title Game, it will be the Texans moving on to being the next lamb to the slaughter by the Mafia… but, not so fast my friend, that Texans D will shut down the one man show in Buffalo and advance to their first ever Super Bowl.

Who will they face, you ask?

In the NFC East, it’s one of those rare years that I’m taking the cheese. I believe that new DC will find a few cures to last year’s spectacularly awful defense and the Cowboys will win the division and be the 2nd seed, while the Eagles will earn a 6th seed wild card. The Giants will be on an upward trajectory, while the Commanders will do the opposite and be looking for a new head coach after the season.

The North is tough, man. I’m going to go with Detroit being the winner and the 3rd seed, with the Bears taking the last wild card slot. I think the Vikings will be better with little Kyler at the controls and finish third while the Packers bring up the rear, but still being a good team.

The South. Blech. I’ll take the Bucs being the 4th seed and every one else is out, finishing Carolina, New Orleans, and Atlanta.

The West is a murderer’s row with those top three teams. However, I fear the Rams have built a super team and will be the winner and the overall #1 seed. Defending Super Bowl champs, Seattle, will feel the effect of losing their OC, but still take the 5th seed wild card. The brittle 49ers won’t be able to stay out of the tow yard or the clink and finish third. Arizona is a distant fourth.

In the playoffs, the Cowboys and Lions win their first round matchup, but as might be expected, Seattle takes down Tampa to advance to the divisonal round. In that round, the Seahawks/Rams matchup will be must see TV, but the Rams survive to host the NFC Championship game against … America’s Team, the Dallas Cowboys. The Perry Brothers have a great time watching that game, but alas, the elder brother will leave happier, as the Rams advance to face the Houston Texans in Super Bowl XXXVVVVIIIXXX or whatever it is.

In the end, the LA Rams will be your Super Bowl Champion this year, officially securing Matthew Stafford’s gold jacket (although I think he’s probably already got it).

Talk to you all on Sunday!
